Maple Sugar

Without further adieu, my new favorite quilt, Maple Sugar!!

After seeing Maple leaf quilts popping up all over Instagram and Flickr I decided that I  had to have one!!  I found this set of directions on Quilters Cache, tweaked them a bit, and then made 36 blocks for my quilt.

I used 18 different fat quarters and made 2 leaves of each print and and paired them with a cream background.

At the last minute I decided to make two blocks that were opposite with cream for the leaf and brown for the background.  When I laid out the top I decided to make them a focal point in the center.

I backed it in the perfect Fall print from the Bella line by Lotta Jansdotter.

I quilted it myself on my machine in my usual all over loopies and then bound it with a fun leaf print from Connecting Threads.

As I said, this is my new favorite quilt, and it's my husband's favorite as well!  It has been shuffling around from our bed to the couch and is in use quite often.

This is also my entry for the Blogger's Quilt Festival over at Amy's Creative Side!  There are so many awesome quilts that are entered so make sure that you stop over and get inspired!

Quilt Stats:
  • Size - 72" x 72"

Weekend Sewing

I spent lots of time sewing this weekend! It was lovely.  I did break for a few hours to de-leaf our yard and enjoy the nice weather.

I started working on my blocks for 4x5 Bee hive mates.  I'm making the Supernova block from Craftsy.  This one is for Becky of My Fabric Obsession.  She asked for navy, aqua and green this round.  I love how this one turned out!

4x5 Bee Block - Hive #6 - For MyFabricObsession

I also decided that it was time to work on finishing my On a Whim out of Amy Butler prints.  I managed to finish getting all the blocks pieced yesterday!  Now they just need to be put into rows.

I also put in some time working on my Sparkling Cider quilt!  This was supposed to be a Christmas gift for my husband but I'm a terrible secret keeper and I already spilled the beans - oops!

According to USPS the backing fabric for my leaf quilt is being delivered today!!  I have one 4x5 bee block that I am mid-piece on so as soon as I finish that it's on to basting and quilting!!

Did you do any sewing this weekend?  Did you go to Sewing Summit?

WIP Wednesday 10-10-12

I'm not sure if it's the weather, the fact that I've been all caught up on housework or just pure luck but I've been having a great week of sewing!  Not that it doesn't always, but it's been making me feel extra happy
and chipper and so I love sewing :)

Let's see what's on the list this week:

Finished -
  • The Mary Kate Experience T-Shirt Quilt - So happy to have this one done and delivered.  Her mom is taking it down to her at college this weekend - can't wait to see what she thinks!
Loads of Pictures HERE
  • Bee Blocks - I'm trying really hard to be less of a procrastinator!!

In Progress -
  • Leaf Quilt - Finished the top, ordered the backing and am hoping to wrap it up this weekend!!
I love making quilts!!
  •   Double Wedding Ring - I finally sat down and finished piecing all of my arches!  I also ordered a polka dot print for the background which came this week so on to the next step of cutting all of those curved pieces.

New -
  • 4x5 Bee - I joined the 4x5 Bee for the Fall quarter and I'm leading the paper pieced hive!  I picked my block, the Supernova from Craftsy, and decided last night to try it out by making my block first.  This one is a doosie!!  So many pieces but I love the end result!!  Now to make some more for my hivemates :)

Loads of seam ripping and one flub up but I love it :)

PS - Are you #notgoingtosewingsummit?  I wanted to go so bad but kind of forgot about it and neglected to save any money to be able to go so I'll have to try next year!  Amy of AmyLouWho is throwing an Instagram #notgoingtosewingsummit sewing party this weekend so join in if you're at home sewing!!  I'm @kelseysews on Instagram.

Quarter 4 Finish A Long

I know, I know, another list.  I have my Hustle List but that has a lot of things that I *want* to get done, but not necessarily need to get done.

I've decided that these three projects are going to go on my Quarter 4 Finish A Long list since I really need them to be done by the end of the year - no excuses!

1) Finish the Leaf Quilt - I finished the top last night and ordered the backing fabric yesterday (from Contemporary Cloth - free shipping through tomorrow night!) so I should wrap this one up soon!

I love making quilts!!

2) Finish my QAL Quilt - This is getting a bit ridiculous.  I've put it on so many lists and I really love the quilt so I don't know what the hold up is.  I have everything I need I just have to sit down to quilt & bind it!

3) Sparkling Cider Quilt - This one is Christmas gift so it must be done before the end of the year!

What do you need to finish by the end of the year?!  Linking up over at Quilter in the Gap.

The Mary Kate Experience

It's finally done!!  The giant t-shirt quilt for my husband's cousin, Mary Kate, is finished and I love it!  Our aunt gave me a huge bag of t-shirts and free reign over the design and colors which was both fun and nerve wracking.

I used twenty-five shirts for the front.  All were cut and backed with lightweight fusible interfacing and then I jazzed them up.  The t-shirt blocks were bordered with bright colors and then all sashed together with 2.5" strips of a grey and white print.  This gave a finished size of approximately 90" square - giant!

I still had more shirts so I pieced three into the back.  The backing fabric is a bright cheery Amy Butler print which I love!  I'll be buying some more of this one to back a quilt of my own.

I free motion quilted the whole quilt in big loops and little Bernie the Bernette kept up like a champ!  One thing that helped with the quilting, at least I think, was using a denim needle.  It had no problem gliding through the seams and layers of interfacing.

I also wanted to do something fun with the shirts that had small emblems on the front/back but were going to be too plain to be a whole block on the quilt top.  Those were cut up and pieced into some coordinating pillows!!

All wrapped up and ready to be delivered tonight!

And now it's time for a break from t-shirts and back to my bee blocks and my hustle list!  Linking up at Finished it up Friday at Crazy Mom quilts, Manic Monday at SewHappyGeek and Fabric Tuesday at Quilt Story.
